The route descends from Brünigpass through alpine forest past the open-air museum Ballenberg to reach Brienz on the shore of the Brienzersee, then follows the lake's northern edge beneath limestone cliff walls through the shoreline villages of Oberried and Niederried. It finishes by passing the historic castle ruin of Ringgenberg with its lake-view church, crossing the Aare, and arriving in Interlaken between the lakes.
