This eleventh stage of the Via Gottardo long-distance hiking route descends from the Gotthard Pass into Airolo, threading through the high-altitude Gotthard Pass region of the Swiss Alps. The surrounding landscape belongs to the upper Ticino, where the Leventina valley opens below and alpine terrain gives way toward the valley floor.

From the south side of the Gotthard Pass, the route winds down through the Leventina valley to follow the Ticino River, crossing from bank to bank past the rock outcrop at Stalvedro. It ends at the Dazio Grande customs house, one of the route's most striking historical landmarks.

Motto Bartola-Ospizio San Gottardo
The trail climbs from the old military fortress of Motto Bartola (1528 m) through the Val Tremola to the Ospizio San Gottardo (2090 m), passing through one of the most strategically important fortified zones south of the Gotthard — defensive installations decommissioned only in 1998 and now partly converted into the Museo Sasso del San Gottardo. Much of the route follows ancient mule tracks (Säumerpfade) where the competing worlds of hikers, military history, and alpine farming visibly collide.
