Il percorso segue la pavimentazione di un antico sentiero mulattiero fino al Passo del Gottardo, un valico utilizzato dai mulattieri per trasportare merci già dal XIII secolo. Lungo il cammino, la caratteristica centrale di ventilazione del tunnel stradale del Gottardo si erge come un padiglione musicale, e la testata del passo ospita un museo dedicato all'era della diligenza postale.
