From the south side of the Gotthard Pass, the route winds down through the Leventina valley to follow the Ticino River, crossing from bank to bank past the rock outcrop at Stalvedro. It ends at the Dazio Grande customs house, one of the route's most striking historical landmarks.

Motto Bartola-Ospizio San Gottardo
El sendero asciende desde la antigua fortaleza militar de Motto Bartola (1528 m) a través del Val Tremola hasta el Ospizio San Gottardo (2090 m), pasando por una de las zonas fortificadas más estratégicamente importantes al sur del Gotthard — instalaciones defensivas desmanteladas solo en 1998 y ahora en parte convertidas en el Museo Sasso del San Gottardo. Gran parte de la ruta sigue antiguos caminos de mulas (Säumerpfade) donde los mundos en competencia de los senderistas, la historia militar y la agricultura alpina chocan visiblemente.
