While the northern hemisphere is deep in summer, winter is running its full course south of the equator. Australia and New Zealand share a ski season that generally spans June to October, and Mr. Alps covers the resorts on both sides of the Tasman Sea with live pages, maps and stats.
Australia: the Snowy Mountains and the Victorian high country
In New South Wales, Perisher is the largest area in the country, with about 84 km of pistes served by 44 lifts up to 2,038 m. Nearby Thredbo reaches a similar top altitude (2,037 m) with roughly 56 km of pistes and the country's longest vertical drop, and the historic Charlotte Pass sits close by at 1,828 m.
Across the border in Victoria, Mount Hotham tops out at 1,856 m with about 37 km of pistes, Mount Buller offers around 48 km and 21 lifts, and Falls Creek rounds out the main trio with roughly 41 km. Smaller areas worth knowing: Selwyn Snow Resort and Mount Baw Baw.
New Zealand: the Southern Alps and the Central Plateau
On the North Island, the Tongariro volcanoes carry the country's two highest ski areas: Tūroa at 2,316 m and Whakapapa at 2,295 m, both on Mount Ruapehu.
On the South Island, the Queenstown and Wanaka areas anchor the scene: Cardrona reaches 1,907 m with about 38 km of pistes, Treble Cone offers roughly 33 km up to 1,955 m, The Remarkables sits above Queenstown itself, and Coronet Peak is the closest area to town. Further north in Canterbury, Mount Hutt is the region's biggest name, alongside club fields like Porters, Craigieburn Valley and Roundhill.
New Zealand's club fields are a category of their own: small, often volunteer-run areas with rope tows and nutcracker lifts, a genuinely different experience from the larger commercial resorts. That range, from a one-lift club field to Perisher's 44 lifts, is exactly the spread Mr. Alps tries to represent everywhere, not just in the Alps.
